Huber Advances to Finals of Easter Bowl Championships

Top-seeded Ditta Huber of La Jolla, displaying an all-court, attacking game, defeated third-seeded Diana Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the finals of the girls’ 16s in the Easter Bowl Tennis Championships at the Doral Resort & Country Club in Miami.
Huber today will face Anne Miller of Midland, Mich., who defeated her USTA National teammate and recent roommate, Valaree Sureephong in straight sets. Miller, the No. 2 seed, beat Sureephong, the No. 4 seed from Haines City, Fla., 6-3, 6-1.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Third-ranked San Diego State fell to No. 1 USC, 15-8, 15-3, 10-15, 15-4, at USC’s North Gym. Mike Mattarocci had a team-high 19 kills for SDSU, which slipped to 16-4, 8-3 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.
BASEBALL
Tony Moeder smashed a two-run home run to dead center field to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth and lead the University of San Diego to a 5-3 victory over Cal State Los Angeles at Cunningham Stadium. The home run was Moeder’s fourth of the season and it allowed senior Tom Cheek (4-3) to pick up his team-leading fourth victory of the season in relief.
Point Loma Nazarene split a doubleheader with visiting St. Mary’s of Minnesota. The Crusaders took the opener, 2-1, and the Redmen won the nightcap, 5-4.
Iona riddled UC San Diego for 18 hits in an 8-1 victory in first round of the UCSD Invitational.
FOOOTBALL
The Chargers signed free-agent wide receiver Troy Kyles. Kyles, 6-feet-1, 188 pounds, played the second half of the 1990 season with the New York Giants after signing a free-agent contract out of Howard University. He had four catches for 77 yards during the regular season after he was cut in training camp then re-signed to spend the first seven weeks of the season in the Giants’ developmental squad. Kyles is the fourth Plan B free agent the Chargers have signed.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Mt. Carmel High’s Vicki de Jesus orally committed to attend USD. A guard/forward, de Jesus was the cornerstone of a Sundevils team that won the San Diego Section Division I championship in 1990 and finished second last season.
MEN’S TENNIS
San Diego State defeated Washington, 5-4, in the first round of the UC Irvine/Marriott Tournament as singles players Joe McDonough, Kerry Safdie, Jeff Belloli and Dax Peterson posted straight-set victories. Ricardo Herrera was upset by Chet Crile, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. SDSU’s No. 1 doubles team of Peterson and Belloli clinched the victory by defeating Criel and Aaron Gross, 6-3, 6-2.
PLNC swept the singles round en route to a 7-2 defeat against visiting Cal State Stanislaus.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
No. 14 USD fell to second-ranked Stanford, 6-0, in a match played at USD’s West Courts. No. 12 Tonya Fuller fell to No. 3 Sandra Birch, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. No. 18 Tuck Kacharoen lost to No. 4 Debbie Graham, the defending NCAA singles champion, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
