Scott Strosnider, an assistant line coach at Santa Ana Valley High School last fall, has been named to succeed Dan Castanon as the school’s varsity football coach.

Strosnider, 27, becomes the youngest head football coach in Orange County. He previously was an assistant for eight years (1982-89) at Edison High.

Strosnider was a starter for Edison’s 1979 Big Five Conference champion as a junior and helped Edison go 14-0 and win the Big Five title again in 1980.

Strosnider earned a scholarship to Boise State but suffered knee and shoulder injuries that ended his collegiate career after one season. He returned to Edison at age 19 as an assistant under Bill Workman in 1982.

Strosnider, who teaches physical education at Santa Ana Valley, currently is hiring his staff and anticipates 100 sophomore and varsity players for spring football drills next month.

“I’m excited,” Strosnider said. “The kids have accepted me real well. I’ve been real busy, but it’s been a lot of fun. I found out after I gave up football that coaching was a great way to stay involved in the game.”
