HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Henry’s Camacho, University City’s Parmenter Fire No-Hitters

Patrick Henry High senior Dan Camacho was one of three San Diego County pitchers to throw a no-hitter Friday.

University City’s Jay Parmenter and Midway Baptist’s Jon Taylor had other gems.

Camacho (1-1) had nine strikeouts and six walks in his first no-hitter as Patrick Henry defeated Morse, 2-1, in a City Eastern League baseball at Patrick Henry.

John Frevola, who reached first and second on walks then advanced to third off a passed ball, scored on a fielder’s choice by Jeff Zlotnik for Morse’s run.

Jeff Williams had two hits with an RBI for Patrick Henry (2-7, 1-1).

University City 12, Kearny 1--University City’s Parmenter (2-1) struck out 11 and walked eight in a City Western League game at Kearny.

Ben Mohr hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning for the Centurions (10-3, 2-0). Adam Stuart went two for three with three RBIs and one runs scored for University City. Also for the Centurions, Peter Uriarte and Barry Waits each went two for three.

Travis Krant, who had reached base on a walk, scored from second off a dropped pop-up to Kearny (3-9-1, 0-2) its only run.

In another City Eastern game:

Mira Mesa 14, Serra 0--Mike Bovee (3-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 for No. 4 Mira Mesa (13-3-1, 1-0). Marauders Mark Nielsen went three for five with a home run and two RBIs and Lee McAfee two for four with three RBIs.

Jim Lafferty suffered his first defeat in five decisions for Serra (11-5-1, 1-1).

City Central League

Madison 5, Hoover 3--Brian Delgado hit a run-scoring triple to give Madison a 4-3 lead then scored off an RBI by Brian Presley to clinch the victory for Madison (4-8, 1-0) in the top of the seventh. Rob Hoffman hit a three-run homer to give Madison a 3-1 third inning lead. Madison’s Mike Jones struck out 11. Hoover is now 1-12, 0-2.

Crawford 11, Lincoln 2--Keith Klayman (3-2) pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk in a complete game for Crawford (5-8, 1-1). Miguel Maldonado with a two-run homer to give Crawford a 10-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Seven starters for Crawford had a hit. Lincoln is now 6-7, 1-1.

City Harbor League

St. Augustine 16, Marian 8--John Mozerka went three for four with two doubles, scored two runs and had three RBIs to lead St. Augustine. Pitcher Jorge Inzunza (4-0) doubled home three runs. St. Augustine (8-5, 2-0) scored its first 10 runs on two hits. Marian is 6-6-1, 0-2.

Metro Conference

Castle Park 3, Sweetwater 1--With Castle Park’s Benji Gil on the mound, Sweetwater didn’t hit a ball in the air out of the infield until a seventh inning bloop single to center by Nolan Alcantara. The only other ball to leave the infield was a grounder by Luis Cuevas that took a wicked hop over Castle Park second baseman Mark Vega.

Cuevas’ two-out single drove in an unearned run for Sweetwater (4-7-1, 1-4). The Red Devils had only one other hit, an infield single.

Gil (4-2) struck out 12, giving him 61 in 32 1/3 innings. He also lowered his earned-run average to 0.87.

“We’re not really playing well. We’re just getting exceptional pitching,” Castle Park Coach Bob Korzep said of his seventh-ranked team that improved to 13-3, 4-0.

Chula Vista 4, Mar Vista 0--Senior Jason Cross (2-3) threw a one-hitter for Chula Vista. Donnie Edwards hit a two run home run in the first inning for Chula Vista.

Hilltop 6, Bonita Vista 6 (12 innings)--Hilltop scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings before darkness halted play. The Lancers (8-3-2, 2-2-1) had three hits in the big inning and took advantage of two errors and four walks; they had the bases loaded when Nathan Dighera grounded out to end the inning. Dighera finished the day three for six. Rock McGinty drove in two runs in the seventh.

Hilltop reliever Johnny Garibay shut out Bonita Vista over the last five innings.

Dave Edwards went two for five with a double and two RBIs for Bonita Vista (1-8-1. 1-3-1). Pitcher Randy Robinson had the game under control before it unraveled in the seventh.

Montgomery 4, Southwest 3--Mike Wazal threw a three-hitter for No. 2 Montgomery to improve to 13-1-1, 5-0. Southwest is now 3-7, 1-4.

Nonleague

Pt. Loma 3, Granite Hills 2--Ray Plummer (2-2) pitched a five-hitter and drove in a run, and Nello Marciel had two RBIs to lead Point Loma (8-7, 1-0).

SOFTBALL

Metro Conference

Castle Park 7, Sweetwater 0--Senior Lori Barker pitched her first career no-hitter, walking one and facing only two batters over the minimum for Castle Park (4-7). Barker (4-7) had four strikeouts.

“I don’t know if she realized she had the no-hitter going,” Trojan Coach Tim Tyler said. “I didn’t realize it until one out in the seventh.”

Barker confessed she had no idea what she had accomplished until after the game.

Angie Lota went two for four with two RBIs, and Barker added a double and a sacrifice in three at-bats.

Nonleague

Mt. Carmel 5, San Pasqual 2--Scia Maumausolo had a bases loaded triple with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to give Mt. Carmel (9-2) the victory. Trish Maumausolo, Scia’s sister, went the distance and struck out seven to improve to 3-0.
