Toreros Defeat Nevada Reno, 8-6

University of San Diego got a clutch ninth-inning relief performance Friday from Chris Collins and scored an 8-6 West Coast Conference baseball victory over Nevada Reno, breaking USD’s six-game losing streak. It also ended USD’s eight-game WCC losing streak.

With one run already and the tying run on base, Collins came on in relief of Pat Crema and retired the next three batters to earn his fourth save of the year. Starter Tom Cheek (5-4) earned the victory.

USD (14-23-2, 7-13) trailed 2-0 entering the third but Rick Doane’s two-run double put the Toreros on top for good, 3-2. UNR is 17-18, 7-14.

SOFTBALL

USD scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat UC San Diego, 3-2, in round robin play at the UCSD Triton Classic.

USD (16-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game after UCSD (14-13) scored twice in the top of the seventh. The teams then went to the international tie-breaker. USD’s Josephine Hudak opened the eighth at second base and took third on Angie Straub’s bunt. June Andrews bunted but Hudak was thrown out at home though Straub reached second. Straub stole third and scored on an errant throw by the catcher.

Dana Chaiken had an RBI triple for UCSD in the seventh and scored on Stephanie Molina’s single to give UCSD the short-lived lead. USD came back in the bottom of the inning. Julie Doria singled and scored on Aimee Reinard’s double. Pinch-runner Andrea Sirianni scored on Melissa Reinard’s single.

In other games, UCSD beat Claremont, 6-2, and USD beat Brigham Young, 1-0, on Tiffany Wasilewski’s one-hitter.

MEN’S TENNIS

Ricardo Herrera defeated Emeka Igbenebor, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 and Joe McDonough beat Anders Skold, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to lead SDSU to a 5-1 victory over Texas-El Paso in a Western Athletic Conference match.

SDSU is 15-6, 5-0. UTEP is 10-7, 3-2.

Jose Luis Noriega and Kevin Bradley, ranked 17th in the nation, beat Cal State Long Beach’s Bill Pham and Dave Fontaine, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to decide USD’s 5-4 victory over the 49ers. Noriega, ranked 10th, also won in singles.

USD is 12-12. Long Beach is 13-12.

UC San Diego lost to host Claremont, 8-1. John Cross defeated Scott Stokdyk, 6-4, 7-5, for UCSD’s only win. UCSD (6-9) will play at Pomona-Pitzer today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene was shut out by Division II Cal State Los Angeles, 9-0, despite some close matches. Crusader Monica Clancy fell 7-6, 7-5 to Veronica Pasley at No. 1 singles. Christa Stutz lost in singles, and in doubles, in three sets. PLNC fell to 9-8. The Golden Eagles improved to 6-11.

The University of San Diego fell to UCLA, 7-2, at the Los Angeles Sports Center. The Toreras got victories from Tonya Fuller at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Laura Richards and Kara Brady. Fuller defeated Kimberly Po, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Richards and Brady beat Iwalani McCalla and Cammie Foley, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. USD fell to 12-10. The Bruins are 18-3.
