San Diego Select Basketball Coach Michael Brunker has received commitments from Parade Magazine’s national high school player of the year, Chris Webber of Detroit, and California player of the year, Cherokee Parks of Marina High, to participate in an upcoming all-star game against the Soviet Union Junior National Team.

The pair of senior standouts will join San Pasqual’s Erik Meek and nine other San Diego County players in the May 17 game at the San Diego Sports Arena.

PAL story--The name of Michael Brunker, a County Probation Department official and founder of the San Diego Police Athletic League, was incorrectly reported in a Times article Wednesday. In addition, Brunker says the story does not make clear that the California Police Activities League’s use of telemarketing to raise funds is a “scam,” but that the statewide organization itself is not.

The game is part of a 10-city tour by the Soviet Junior National Team in association with the United States’ AAU.

Brunker, the athletic director of the San Diego Police Athletic League, selected his San Diego Select team from more than 25 local players who participated in tryouts, but he also had received permission to “select” a couple of players from outside the county.

Brunker said Meek helped with securing commitments from Webber, who attends Detroit Country Day, and Parks.

Meek and Parks will attend NCAA champion Duke University in the fall. Webber is headed to Michigan.

Because of all the national all-star games and summer camps that Meek, Parks and Webber have been involved in together, Brunker said, “those guys have known each other for years.”

Other local players include: Alfonso De La Nuez and Travis Knight of Ramona High; Heath McCoy and Shaun Scurry of El Camino; Brad Grubaugh and Darryl Parker of Rancho Buena Vista; Matt de la Pena of San Dieguito; Chris Miller of Fallbrook; and John Price of Mission Bay.
