PREP ROUNDUP : Carvin Helps Laguna Hills Win Boys’ Swimming Title

Chad Carvin of Laguna Hills won three individual events and was part of two winning relay teams as the Hawks won the Pacific Coast League boys’ swimming title with 591 points.

Estancia (373) was second and Laguna Beach (324) was third.

Carvin won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute 43.58 seconds), the 100 freestyle (49.34) and the 500 freestyle (4:29.95). He was part of the 200 medley relay (1:41.28) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.15), which both won.

Shuichi Matsumoto won the 100 backstroke (54.69) and the 200 individual medley (1:54.63) and Bryan Stoeckel won the 100 butterfly (52.84) for Laguna Hills.

In the Century League boys’ swimming finals:

Foothill wins--The Knights (358 points) outdistanced second-place Villa Park (266) at Foothill. Foothill’s Mark Hansen won the 50-yard freestyle (22.14), the 500 freestyle (4:51.05) and swam on Foothill’s winning medley relay (1:41.52) and freestyle relay (3:18.26) teams. Hansen was also voted the league’s swimmer of the year.

In the Century League girls’ swimming finals:

Foothill wins--Foothill collected 400 points, well ahead of second-place Villa Park (196). Foothill’s Megan Logan won the 200 individual medley (2:11.97), the 100 butterfly (1:00.34) and was named the league’s swimmer of the year.

In Orange League volleyball:

El Modena 3, Villa Park 0--Aaron Seltzer had 11 kills and Aaron Aguilera had six kills and three blocks for El Modena (10-6, 8-2), which swept, 15-10, 15-7, 15-7.

Valencia 3, Canyon 0--Dan Melia had 12 kills for host Valencia in a 15-2, 15-2, 15-10 sweep. Valencia finishes the regular season at 16-0, 10-0.

In Pacific Coast League volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 0--With a 16-14, 15-7, 15-4 victory, Laguna Beach won the league championship with a 10-0 record and was 14-4 overall. Laguna Beach will begin the CIF playoffs on Friday.

Trabuco Hills 3, Century 0--Brian Donahue had 10 kills for visiting Trabuco Hills (8-6, 7-3) which won, 15-5, 15-2, 15-8, and finished second in league.

In South Coast League volleyball:

Irvine 3, El Toro 0--Visiting Irvine secured a third-place finish and a CIF playoff berth with a 15-11, 15-9, 15-7 victory. Kurt Povirk had 11 kills and six blocks, Chris Swanner had 12 kills and Adam Christofferson had 52 assists for Irvine (11-5, 6-4).

In the Angelus League tennis tournament:

Rodogna wins title--Tim Rodogna of Bishop Amat defeated Adam Jarrett of Mater Dei, 6-4, 6-0, to win the singles title and Joe Montoya and Danny Wood of Bishop Amat defeated Alton Shader and Dave Rohan of Loyola, 6-1, 6-1, to win the doubles title.

In Orange League tennis:

Magnolia 16, Brea-Olinda 2--Magnolia (4-6) won 16 of 18 games to close out the regular season with a victory and take third place in league. Dan Smithline won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, David Lopez won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, Chanderdeep Shinh won, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3, in singles, and David Vu and Charlie Vu swept, 6-4, 6-0, 7-6, and Tan Nguyen and Phuong Nguyen won, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0, in doubles for Magnolia.

Savanna 12, Anaheim 6--Todd Merriman swept his sets at love for host Savanna (5-14, 4-6).

Valencia 10, Western 8--Valencia (16-4, 10-0) won its eighth consecutive league title. In doubles, Valencia’s Steve Johnson and Ron Lacuata won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and Huey Dang and Robert Bae won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Both doubles teams went 30-0 this season.
