HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING : Walnut Wins Boys’ and Girls’ 2-A Titles

Walnut High pulled off a sweep in the Southern Section 2-A swimming championships Saturday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

The Mustangs dominated the boys’ division, finishing with 210 points--20 better than second-place Laguna Hills.

In the girls’ competition, the Mustangs won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to overtake Rolling Hills, 128 to 114. Rolling Hills did not have a team in the 400 freestyle relay final.

Dan Miles and Ryan Cabinte were Walnut’s only individual champions in the boys’ competition. Miles set a 2-A record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1 minute 51.23 seconds and Cabinte won the 100 breaststroke in 58.93.

Walnut also won the 200 IM and 200 freestyle relays. The Mustangs set a 2-A record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.73.

Laguna Hills received a strong individual performance from Chad Carvin, who set a 2-A record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:22.08.

Brian Jacobson of Downey broke his own 2-A record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.99.

Mary Petry led the Walnut girls’ team by winning the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She set a 2-A record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.60.

In the 3-A division, the Santa Monica boys and the Brea-Olinda girls scored easy victories.

Santa Monica had 200 points to 139 for runner-up El Dorado. The Vikings started by winning the 200 medley relay. Chris Baskett then won the 200 freestyle and Steve Warner the 200 IM and Santa Monica was on its way to the title. Baskett and Warner finished 1-2 in the 500 freestyle.

Brea got the most out of a group of six swimmers, finishing with 173 points. Trabuco Hills was second with 129.5 points.
