Buena Coach Keeps Track of Colleague

In Mike Glaze’s article Saturday, May 4, on the Marmonte League track finals, Agoura Coach Bill Duley laments how it was “real sad” that his runner, Tiffany York, didn’t qualify for the Southern Section 3-A Division prelims in the 3,200 meters because the competition was so tough.

This is the same man (Duley) who moved his girls’ cross-country team from Division II to Division I last fall because he wanted his team “to run against the best.” In cross-country, they ran against the best and won, and Duley supported the rule that allowed his team to move up.

But now in track, when one of his runners runs against the best and it doesn’t work to Agoura’s advantage, Duley wants the CIF to make a rule allowing “at-large” berths so his runners can advance even if they do not finish among the top three in their league.

I guess it’s easy to forget that you’re not supposed to have things go both ways in life. Hopefully, the CIF will remember.
