Ruby Gonzalez pitched a three-hitter as undefeated Sylmar High beat San Fernando, 4-0, in a City Section 4-A Division softball quarterfinal Wednesday at Sylmar.

Sylmar (16-0) had only six hits--all singles--but took advantage of five errors. Gonzalez (11-0), a junior, pitched her seventh shutout. She did not walk a batter and Sylmar did not make an error.

“We got the runners on and forced them to make mistakes,” Sylmar Coach Chuck Miller said.

Sylmar will play El Camino Real in the semifinals Wednesday at South Gate Park. Sylmar defeated El Camino Real, 2-1, in a 12-inning nonleague game in March.

Sylmar reached base four times on bunts and also executed two sacrifice bunts. “Our whole team watched their last game against Van Nuys and we knew we could get on using the bunt,” Miller said.

Traci Hanna, who leads the Spartans with a .460 average, had three hits. Regina Hernandez and Nikki Wright each singled to drive in a run in the sixth.
