HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Raiders Advance to Semis

Top-seeded Southwest defeated Granite Hills, 15-5, 15-6, 15-4, in the quarterfinals of the San Diego Section Boys’ 3-A Volleyball Championships Friday at Southwest.

Southwest (16-0), which reached the semifinals for the second year in a row, will play fifth-seeded Poway Tuesday.

The Raiders were led by Jerald Burrow with six kills, three aces and eight digs. Also for Southwest, Jess Taijeron had eight kills, and Leo Vargas had five kills and three blocks. Granite Hills finished, 13-2.

In other 3-A matches:

Poway d. San Dieguito--The Titans outlasted fourth-seeded San Dieguito, 12-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-13, 15-9 in a match that lasted 2 hours 51 minutes. Chris Steineke had 32 kills, Oren Zaslanski had 28 and sophomore Ben Moselle added 18 kills for San Dieguito (12-3).

Torrey Pines d. Bonita Vista--In a 15-11, 15-9, 15-6 victory, the Falcons served strong and played good defense behind Curt Hensel in improving to 13-2 and advancing to the semifinals. Sean Langdon had 12 kills and Scott Pollard added eight for Torrey Pines, which has only lost to Poway and Capistrano Valley this season.

2-A Matches:

Oceanside d. Grossmont--The Pirates held off Grossmont for a 16-14, 15-7, 14-16, 3-15, 15-4 victory. Jermaine King had 19 kills and James Senda had 15 kills and six digs to help unseeded Oceanside (11-5). Jeff Bender had 15 kills, Dave Huish had 12 and Travis Hume had 10 kills for fourth-seeded Grossmont (11-7). Mike Houvilla added 42 assists for the Foothillers. Oceanside will play top-seeded San Pasqual in Tuesday’s semifinals.

San Pasqual d. San Marcos--The Golden Eagles won, 13-15, 15-12, 15-9, 15-10. Cullen Owen came in in the second game and made the difference for top-seeded San Pasqual (14-3) with 21 perfect passes with only one error. Also for the Golden Eagles, Matt Noonan had 22 kills and Matt Baglio had 15 kills. San Marcos finished 12-4.

San Diego d. University City--In a 15-10, 15-12, 4-15, 15-8 triumph, third-ranked San Diego (13-1) was led by Abel Salgado with 21 kills. Teammates Brendan Hill and German Alvarez added 12 and 10 kills each. Tevya Weinthal led University City with 25 kills and Kyle Harcos had 56 assists. San Diego will play second-ranked USDHS in the semifinals.

USDHS d. Hoover--Coasting to a 15-4, 15-6, 15-9 victory, the second-seeded Dons (16-1) extended their winning streak to 13 matches, getting 12 kills out of Jeremy Sweet and nine each from Pat Bonner and Matt Zimsky.
