CS Northridge Signs Sutherland for Track

Akua Sutherland of Muir High, the Southern Section 4-A Division champion in the girls’ 100-meter low hurdles and the triple jump, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Sutherland, who also placed third in the long jump in the 4-A meet, has personal bests of 14.47 seconds in the low hurdles and 37-11 in the triple jump.

John Brown, a 6-foot-7 forward from Village Christian High, has accepted a partial scholarship to play basketball at Azusa Pacific.

Brown had visited Azusa Pacific in March and accepted the scholarship Monday. Azusa Pacific, which plays in the Golden State Athletic Conference, is an NAIA school.

Brown averaged 26.9 points and 10.1 rebounds last season.

Gregg Sheren, shortstop at El Camino Real High, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball next season at Lewis and Clark State College in Lewiston, Ida. Lewis-Clark has won the past five NAIA titles.

Sheren, (6-3, 180 pounds) batted .430 this season and was a first-team All-West Valley League selection. Sheren, primarily known for his defensive play, led Northwest Valley Conference players in runs batted in with 34.

He also had six doubles, three triples and two home runs for a slugging percentage of .658.

Andy Boynton, the offensive line coach at Mater Dei High the past two seasons, has been selected as football coach at St. Francis High.

Boynton, 30, replaces Bill Garrison, who resigned after two seasons to accept the coaching position at South Pasadena High.

Boynton, an All-Southern Section lineman at Crescenta Valley High who went on to play at St. Mary’s, was one of two finalists. He was an assistant at Pasadena City College for three seasons before joining Mater Dei’s staff.

Tim DeGrasse, a right-handed pitcher for UC Santa Barbara, has been named to the All-Big West Conference team. DeGrasse formerly played for Notre Dame High and Valley College.

Larry Lawrence, who resigned as Santa Clara High football coach last fall after two seasons in which the Saints were a combined 14-10, was named an assistant coach at Oxnard High.
