SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS ROUNDUP : Ace Performance in Doubles Gives La Quinta Victory

La Quinta swept all doubles sets to defeat Esperanza, 11-7, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 3-A boys’ tennis playoffs Tuesday at Esperanza.

La Quinta took an 8-7 lead when its No. 3 doubles team of Loi Du and Khanh Ha won, 7-5, over Esperanza’s No. 1 doubles team after trailing, 5-4. Du and Ha won their other two sets, 6-1, 6-3. Hien Ngo and Dung Doan swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 singles for La Quinta (20-1). Mike Hammer swept, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for Esperanza (21-1).

La Quinta will play Sunny Hills in a semifinal Thursday.

In another 3-A match:

Sunny Hills 13, Laguna Beach 5--Sunny Hills (18-0) swept in doubles at Laguna Beach (16-6). Matt Erwin and Danny Lee won their doubles sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. Laguna Beach finishes 16-6.

In 4-A matches:

Dana Hills 18, Woodbridge 0--Ben Stevens swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Brice Martin and Jeremy Driscoll swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, for visiting Dana Hills (21-0). Dana Hills will play University in a semifinal Thursday.

University 14, Mission Viejo 4--John Bowerbank swept at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, and Robbie Wilkins and Ryan Spruston swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 7-5, 6-3, for the visiting Trojans (21-1). Mission Viejo ends 14-10.

Santa Barbara 14, Corona del Mar 4--David Bain won two of three singles sets, including a 6-4 victory over Peter Jeschke, the top-ranked player in the Southern Section, for visiting Corona del Mar (14-6).
