Kaelin, Spencer Make NAIA All-Area Team

Kris Kaelin and Michael Spencer, former area high school and junior college baseball standouts, finished careers at Eastern Oregon by being named to the NAIA All-Area team, which consists of players from California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Hawaii.

Spencer, a senior third baseman from Hueneme High and Ventura College, also was named the District 2 and Timber Prairie Athletic Conference player of the year after batting .464 with six home runs and 49 runs batted in.

Kaelin, a senior first baseman from Thousand Oaks High and Moorpark College, batted .424 with seven home runs and 44 RBIs.

Scott Fujii of Agoura Hills won the national championship in the bantamweight division in last weekend’s Tae Kwon Do championships in Portland, Ore. The event is sponsored by the U. S. Tae Kwon Do Union.

Fujii, 21, also was named the male athlete of the year by the association. The Calabasas High graduate qualified for the U. S. national team trials, scheduled for June 13-15 at the Olympic training facility in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Fujii is eligible for the Olympic Festival but might compete in the Pan American Games instead if he makes the U. S. national team.

The Summer Open ’91 racquetball tournament will be held June 7-9 at Racquetball World in Canoga Park.

The event, which will feature play in 20 different divisions, is topped by the men’s open division, in which a $500 first prize will be awarded. Four other categories will provide cash prizes. Entry deadline is Monday, June 3.

Moorpark College finished second to Bakersfield in the competition for the Western State Conference 1990-91 athletic supremacy award. Moorpark, which won the 1989-90 award, won five conference championships and earned bonus points for the wrestling team’s state championship and men’s soccer team’s second-place state finish.

Ventura finished fourth, Glendale sixth, Valley eighth, Pierce and Canyons in a tie for ninth and Oxnard 11th among 12 schools.

The Valley Pride Wings girls’ club soccer team recently won the National Cup for the Southern California region in the under-19s and qualified for the Far Western regional in Denver, June 14-19.
