HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS : Wins Puts Smith in 4th Round

Share

La Jolla High’s David Smith advanced to play sixth-seeded Joe Barbarie of University City after his 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mike Blunt of University of San Diego High in the third round of the section boys’ individual singles tournament Tuesday at Morley Field.

Smith, who has signed a letter of intent with Cal, probably would have been seeded if not for his recurring injury problems. He was unable to play in many of the Southern California ranking tournaments because of hip and leg injuries in the winter.

The CIF seeded players based on their Southern California rankings.

La Jolla Country Day’s John Chang defeated Valhalla’s Paul O’Neill, 6-4, 6-3, and will face top-seeded Jerry Miyamoto of Patrick Henry.

After beating Luis Altamirano of St. Augustine, 6-4, 6-4, Marko Silva of Point Loma will face second-seeded Jon Elsberry of La Jolla.

If Elsberry and Smith win Wednesday, they will meet in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

James Conda, seeded third, and Jimmy Brown, seeded fifth, give La Jolla four players in the round of 16.

After ousting Brian Railey and David Milies of Mar Vista, 6-3, 6-2, Darin McDonald and Ryan Connor of Mira Mesa have the honor of meeting the top-seeded doubles team of Christian Abbott and Derek Baker from Torrey Pines.

Matt Bonin and Jose Lopez of St. Augustine will meet the second seeds, Simon Kurth and Jon Gilula of La Jolla. Bonin and Lopez beat David Goldman and George Salazar of Bonita Vista, 6-4, 6-3.

Today’s round of 16 singles and doubles matches begin at 1 p.m.
