Juliana Yendork of Walnut broke her own national triple jump record with a leap of 44 feet 1/2 inch to highlight the opening day of the two-day State high school track and field championships at Cerritos College Friday.

It was the third consecutive week that Yendork broke a national record in the triple jump. Her previous best was 43-6 1/4 set last week in the Masters meet. Yendork also was the top qualifier in the long jump with a wind-aided leap of 20 feet.

Also in the spotlight was sophomore Marion Jones of Oxnard Rio Mesa, who ran the fastest fully automatic-timed prep girls’ 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 11.12 seconds.

She also had the best mark in the 200 meters with a wind-aided 22.97.

In the girls’ team competition, Inglewood Morningside did well, qualifying Santisha Arnold and Tai-Ne Gibson in the 100 and 200 meters, Lashawn Stringer in the 400 meters and their 400-meter relay with the top mark of 46.14.

In the boys’ team competition, Compton lost some of its edge when Edwin Hervey injured a hamstring at the end of his 400-meter heat. Hervey, who still qualified in 47.85 and ran a leg on the Tarbabes’ leading qualifying 400-meter relay team, did not run in his 200-meter heat and is questionable for today’s final.

Compton still has Ricky Carrigan, who was the top qualifier in the 100 and 200 with wind-aided times of 10.32 and 20.85.

Anaheim Esperanza, led by Mark Parlin, has become the favorite. Parlin was the top qualifier in the shotput with a toss of 63 feet 1/2 inch and the discus in 185-2.

Hawthorne qualified Demond Smith in the 100-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in addition to its 400-meter relay team in 41.82, the day’s third fastest time.
