Although each played singles matches during the regular season, Carson High brothers Rene and Roel DeVera combined forces three weeks ago. On Wednesday, they needed only 55 minutes to clinch the L.A. City Section doubles title.

They defeated Taft’s Derek Halpern and Andy Kimelman, 6-1, 6-2, at the Racquet Centre in Studio City. The DeVeras, who won each of their six postseason matches, last played together at the Ojai Valley tennis tournament in April.

“We got along better on the court than we expected,” said Roel, a junior. “Everything clicked.”

Roel’s superior ground strokes and Rene’s aggressive net play proved to be the difference.

Banning’s top-seeded Robert Johnson defaulted to Grant’s Marc Simon in a third-place match. Johnson was upset by Grant’s Paul Knizek in three sets Monday.

Westchester’s No. 2 seeded doubles team of Aaron Polk and Omar Yassin defeated Taft’s Robert Polak and Erik Ficksman, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in a third-place match.
