Shortstops Jason Bates of Cypress College and Phil Nevin of Cal State Fullerton are among 41 players invited to the U.S. Pan American Games baseball tryouts.

Bates helped Cypress win its first state community college baseball championship May 27 at Sacramento. Nevin, who also kicks for Fullerton’s football team, led the Titan baseball team to a 34-22 record and a share of the Big West Conference championship.

The Pan-Am Games are Aug. 2-18 in Havana, Cuba.

Bryant Winslow and Joe Sewell of UC Irvine signed with the Houston Astros and will report next week to the organization’s Class-A team in Auburn, N.Y.

Winslow, a senior first baseman who batted .262 and set the school single-season record with 10 home runs, was drafted in the 14th round.

Sewell, a senior right-handed pitcher who was 4-7 with a 7.81 earned-run average and 51 strikeouts, was selected in the 24th round.

Winslow and Sewell grew up in Littleton, Colo., and played on the same Little League, junior high and high school teams. Winslow transferred from Wichita State to join Sewell, his roommate, at Irvine this past season.

Mike Robertson, former first baseman at Servite High School, has signed with the Chicago White Sox and has reported to the club’s mini-camp in Sarasota, Fla., according to scout Mike Sgobba.

Robertson was a first-team, all-Pacific 6 selection this season at USC, where batted .329 with 14 homers and 57 runs batted in. Robertson was previously drafted by the Angels as a high school senior but declined a $100,000 package and attended USC.

Jim Austin, a former outfielder for Mater Dei High School and Arizona State, said he has signed a minor league contract with the Montreal Expos.

He said he has been assigned to the Expos’ Class-A affiliate at Jamestown, N.Y., of the New York-Penn League. Austin was part of Arizona State’s “million-dollar” outfield, which also included Mike Kelly of Los Alamitos High (drafted by the Atlanta Braves) and Tommy Adams of Capistrano Valley (drafted by the Seattle Mariners).

The Expos selected Austin in the fourth round of the recent amateur free-agent draft.

Christ College Irvine baseball players Mike Adams and Paul Weldon have received honorable mention from the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Adams, a junior, was named the NAIA District 3 player of the year after leading the district with a .465 batting average. Adams, a junior, also had a 10-2 record and a 2.25 earned-run average.

Weldon, a first-team all-district first baseman, led the district with 40 stolen bases and was second in batting average (.459).

Julie Hanks, La Quinta High School girls’ basketball coach, has resigned after one season to become the head coach at Phoenix (Ariz.) Community College, La Quinta Athletic Director Jim Perry said Monday.

La Quinta finished 7-16 overall and tied for fifth in the Garden Grove League last season.
