Shawn Green, a record-setting outfielder for the Tustin High School baseball team, was selected as a high school All-American by USA Today, it was announced Monday.
Green, The Times Orange County player of the year, batted .479 last season and set the county record for career hits with 147. Green has signed a letter of intent to play for Stanford and was drafted 16th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in the recent amateur free-agent draft.
Green was one of three California athletes to make the first team. Dmitri Young, a shortstop from Oxnard Rio Mesa, and Benji Gil, a shortstop and pitcher from Chula Vista Castle Park, were the others.
Two players who signed letters of intent to play for Cal State Fullerton--Dante Powell, an outfielder from Millikan and Mike Sweeney, a catcher from Ontario--were named to the second team. Powell, the Southern Section Division 5-A player of the year, was drafted between the first and second rounds by the Blue Jays, and Sweeney, a 10th-round pick of Kansas City, signed a contract with the Royals.
