Muir High Teams Advance to Final 16 at L.A. Games

Muir High is the only school from the San Gabriel Valley that had more than one team advance to the final rounds of the L.A. Watts Summer Games.

The Mustangs reached the final 16 in boys’ basketball and water polo.

The 10th-seeded Muir basketball team will play perennial L.A. City power Fairfax in the round of 16 at 10 a.m. Saturday at L.A. Jordan.

Seventh-seeded Fairfax, which finished 18-8 last season, has an outstanding group of guards including Burt Harris, Donti Ceruti and Jahi Bacon.

Harris, a point guard, averaged 21.7 points and earned All-City honors and Bacon was an All-Westside selection two seasons ago at St. Monica in Santa Monica.

The Mustangs have an outstanding contingent of guards led by Jacque Vaughn, an All-Southern Section selection who averaged 21.3 points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals.

The Mustangs, who finished 23-5 and reached the CIF Division II-AA semifinals, also feature guards Adrian Gayles, Simaine Stewart and Demetrius Collier and center Donald McIntire.

Muir has tournament victories over San Pedro, 71-52, and L.A. Jordan, 43-35. Fairfax defeated Mid-City, 64-26, and Washington, 49-32.

The winner advances to the quarterfinals against either Fremont or Kennedy at 1 p.m. Saturday at L.A. Jordan and the semifinals and final will be Sunday at El Camino College.

In water polo, Muir will meet Downey at 9 a.m. Saturday at El Camino. The Mustangs, who advanced to the CIF 3-A Division semifinals last season, won by forfeit against South Pasadena.

A Muir victory would send the Mustangs into the quarterfinals Saturday and the semifinals and final will be Sunday.

Claremont and Sierra Vista have reached the quarterfinals in boys’ soccer, to be played Saturday at Rose Bowl Park in Pasadena. Sierra Vista will play San Fernando at 9 a.m. and Claremont will play Capistrano Valley at 10:30 a.m.

Sierra Vista defeated Hawthorne, 2-1, and Claremont beat Bell, 1-0, in the third round of the tournament last week. The semifinals are Saturday at Rose Bowl Park and the final is Sunday at El Camino.

Pasadena Poly advanced to the quarterfinals in girls’ softball and will play Torrance at 1 p.m. Saturday at El Camino. The semifinals and final will be Sunday.
