La Jolla Gymnast Ties for First Place

Nicole Holcomb, representing the La Jolla YMCA, tied for first all-around Monday in the opening day of the YMCA Women’s National Gymnastics Championship at the Town & Country Convention Center.

Holcomb competed in the second of two Level 6 competition sessions. She took first in the uneven bars and third on the balance beam en route to the title she shared with Shauna Trumble of the Cuyamaca YMCA.

The meet, which concludes Wednesday, is hosted by the Mission Valley YMCA. There are approximately 677 athletes representing 65 YMCAs around the country.

FOOTBALL

The San Diego Chargers’ 11th-round draft pick, wide receiver Joe Weinberg, has signed a contract, the team announced.

Weinberg, 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, gained 2,171 yards (16.1 average) on 135 receptions in four years at Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina. His longest carry was 60 yards.

Terms of the contract were not released.
