SPORTS BRIEFS : 49ers Win 5 of 6 Games on Trip Through Canada

The Cal State Long Beach men’s basketball team won five of six games from the Canadian Junior National Team in the Lethbridge Herald Challenge Cup series that concluded Sunday in Calgary, Alberta. Guard Bobby Sears was voted the series’ most valuable player, and guard Lucious Harris and forward Frankie Edwards were chosen to the All-Challenge team.

Three of the 36 Olympic Festival events will be held at sites in the Southeast/Long Beach area. The festival, which opens Friday with ceremonies at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, runs through July 21. Events being held in the local area are yachting, hosted by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club with races scheduled off the Long Beach coast Monday through Wednesday; water polo, Tuesday through July 20 at Cal State Long Beach; and ice speed skating, July 21 at Iceland Ice Skating Arena, Paramount.

Rio Hondo College wrestling Coach John Rosales is the Olympic Festival facilities coordinator for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, to be held at El Camino College near Torrance. It begins Sunday.

The Stingrays, a new semipro football team that hopes to play in the High Desert League, will hold tryouts at 4 p.m. Saturday at Marshall Middle School in Long Beach. Linemen and quarterbacks are especially needed. Information: Steve Robinson, 867-4334.

Ichiban Red, a Long Beach volleyball team for girls age 16 and younger, won its second consecutive title last Sunday at the U.S. Junior Olympic Championships in Tampa, Fla. The team is coached by Roger Goodwin.
