COUNTY NOTES : Magdaleno Tops Tonight’s Card

Ernie Magdaleno of Westminster, a light heavyweight with an 8-0 record, makes his main-event debut tonight on the monthly boxing card, which starts 7:30 at the Irvine Marriott.

Magdaleno will have a formidable opponent in Ivan Rukavina of Melbourne, Australia. Rukavina, 7-1 as a professional, also had an extensive amateur career.

Tony McCabe has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Fullerton High School, Ed Shaw, the school’s principal, announced.

McCabe has coached girls’ basketball at Diamond Bar for 10 years, the past four with the varsity. He replaces Chris Burton, who is now coaching at Villa Park.

Thirty-six golfers, including first-round leaders Tiger Woods and Justin Klein, were unable to complete the second round of the USGA Junior Amateur Golf Championship in Orlando, Fla., because of lightning and heavy rains.

Woods, 15, of Cypress, and Klein of Phoenix, Md., had 70s in the first round. Wednesday, Woods had a 34 on the front nine; Klein, 17, had 38.

Dan Dalton of Huntington Beach shot four-under-par 68 to share the lead in the boys’ 15-18 division after two rounds of the Cog Hill Junior Championship at Lemont, Ill. Dalton and Tony Carnivale of Quincy, Ill., are at 140.

In the boys’ 13-14, first-round leader Ben Garner of El Toro shot 75 and fell two back of Jose Bird of Puerto Rico.
