OUTLOOK

Most other league coaches look at the Argonauts as the team to beat this year. Buenafe goes into his fourth season at the school with an experienced group that features 20 returning lettermen. Ioja, a first team all-league selection last year, has good hands and provides a sizable target for Fuentes, the scrappy quarterback who sparked the Argonaut offense after he took over as the starter just before the first league game against La Quinta. Rancho Alamitos Coach Mark Miller said Fuentes is the “one guy on that team that really concerns me.” All-leaguer Knee is a tough customer at center who utilizes his quickness to counter for his lack of size, and Pluard, another all-league selection, is the best defensive player on the team and perhaps the top linebacker in the league. Buenafe said the team could reach its goals if the players “stay together and become more unselfish.” If the Argonauts indeed win the championship, it would be their first since 1980. They finished fourth last year after three consecutive seasons in the cellar and only one league victory in 21 games during those seasons.
