OUTLOOK

The defending Division VI champions will miss premier running backs Kenny Overby and Mike Sullivan but should be strong again defensively. Sunny Hills returns four very good defensive starters--Bobby Sunderland, Mark Veronda, Brian Willmer and Marlon Womack--and got more help when Jason Waugh transferred from Chino. The big task is completely rebuilding the offensive line, where every player is inexperienced. The quarterback position is wide open with last year’s backup, Steve Mellano, battling converted wide receiver Bobby Sunderland. Sunderland played quarterback for Sunny Hills’ freshman team in 1989. The Lancers won league titles on every level--freshman, sophomore, junior varsity and varsity--last fall. The varsity team made its 10th playoff appearance in 11 seasons last year under Devaney, who earned his 100th career victory at Sunny Hills with a 7-3 victory over Tustin in the championship game. Sunny Hills has won seven league titles in 11 years, missing the playoffs only once because of a forfeiture in 1981.
