USD Gets Split at Northridge Tournament

The University of San Diego’s women’s volleyball team Friday lost its first match of the season, to Cal State Northridge, then went on to defeat Cal State Fullerton in the Cal State Northridge Invitational.

San Diego lost to Northridge 17-15, 8-15, 6-15, 10-15 to drop to 3-1. Junior Patty Fitzsimmons led Cal State Northridge (2-3) with 17 kills. For San Diego, Andrea Bruns had 12 kills and teammate Nikki Wallace had 11 kills.

The Toreras ran their record to 4-1 by defeating Cal State Fullerton 15-9, 15-13, 17-15. Jennifer Lofftus highlighted the attack with 18 kills, hitting .375. Wallace and Bruns teamed up for 21 kills in the victory.

Point Loma Nazarene College advanced to the semifinals of the Holiday Inn Tournament by winning two of three matches.

After losing to Humboldt State, 15-11, 15-12, 4-15, 15-7, PLNC went on to beat Mesa College (Colo.), 15-12, 15-10, 15-10, and The Master’s College, 15-5, 15-8, 4-15, 15-7.

PLNC (6-2), ranked No. 9 in the NAIA preseason poll, will face the winner of Friday night’s game between No. 2 Fresno Pacific and Hawaii Hilo, another top-10 school, in a semifinal match this morning at 11.

In Friday’s action, Robin Rebello had 14 kills against Humboldt and Debby Simpson contributed four aces. Against Mesa, Rebello had 17 kills. Aurora Van Sickle came up with 14 kills against The Master’s College.

Elizabeth Tan and Liz Vesanovic each had seven kills as UC San Diego (2-0) defeated UC Santa Cruz, 15-4, 15-5, 15-13.

SURFING

The Bud Pro Surfing Tour’s competition at Lower Trestles, Camp Pendleton, advanced eight surfers Friday into Main Event Round Two.

Andy Fomenko, ranked 29th, led Friday’s surfers by winning his heat, which included fourth-ranked Ted Robinson, who was eliminated.

Other heat winners in the Main Event were Vince De La Pena, Colin Smith and Pat O’Connell. Action continues today with Brad Gerlach of Encinitas and Dino Andino, 1990 Champion, trying to advance.

The $50,000 Body Glove Surfbout IV continues through Saturday with the finals scheduled to begin Sunday at 11 a.m..
