HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Bishop Amat Struggles Past Riverside Rubidoux, 12-6

Bishop Amat, the Times’ fifth-ranked Southern Section team, struggled to a 12-6 nonleague victory Thursday night in its opener at Riverside Rubidoux.

After trailing, 6-0, at halftime, Scott Fields led Bishop Amat with two second-half touchdowns. Fields, limited to 33 yards in 12 carries in the first half, finished with 170 yards in 24 carries and scored on runs of 11 and 14 yards.

Walnut 13, Diamond Bar 0--Walnut starting quarterback Tom Vasquez left the game on a stretcher in the second quarter after tackling a Diamond Bar player on a fake field goal attempt. He was replaced by junior Tom Croepel, who performed well in relief at Mt. San Antonio College.

Senior running back Clint Poulter was the workhorse for Walnut, gaining 89 yards in 23 carries and scoring on touchdown runs of 13 and five yards.

Norwalk Glenn 10, La Puente 6--Glenn drove 90 yards in the final 2:47, scoring the winning touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Joey Romero to Adam Weister to win the nonleague opener at La Mirada High.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth quarter, La Puente went ahead, 6-3, when Henry Barraza connected with James Balfazar on a 49-yard touchdown pass play with 2:58 left.

The Eagles then mounted the long drive, keyed by a 50-yard pass from Romero to Roy Thomas.

Alhambra 30, Glendale 28--Pathon Rucker, Glendale’s senior star running back, left in the first half because of a shoulder injury as visiting Alhambra pulled an upset.

Rucker, who gained 1,878 yards and scored 31 touchdowns last season, rushed for 40 yards in 11 carries and scored once but did not play in the second half.
