Oxnard 34, Westchester 8--Versatile Oxnard quarterback Larry Bumpus rushed for 112 yards in eight carries, and running back Dan Duchai scored two touchdowns as the Yellowjackets opened with an impressive win at home.

Bumpus, a 5-10, 170-pound junior, also completed nine of 17 pass for 87 yards. His one-yard touchdown pass to Chris Winters with 42 seconds remaining in the second quarter gave Oxnard a 14-0 lead.

Duchai, who finished with 53 yards in eight carries, scored on a four-yard run late in the third quarter that followed a 58-yard keeper by Bumpus one play earlier. On its next possession, Oxnard marched 67 yards in seven plays with Rocky Lewis completing the drive with a two-yard touchdown run that made it 27-0.

Chaminade 28, Newbury Park 21--Running back Justin Giovannettone rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns in 22 carries to lead Chaminade over host Newbury Park.

Giovannettone’s last touchdown, a 44-yard run on fourth-and-inches with 3:16 remaining in the game, provided the margin of victory.

Newbury Park pulled to within 28-21 with 1:50 remaining when sophomore quarterback Keith Smith hit Leodes Van Buren on a 14-yard touchdown pass. The Panthers got the ball back with 1:06 to go and moved the ball to Chaminade’s 36, but a Smith pass was intercepted by Chaminade linebacker Ted Corcoran.

Smith completed 13 of 25 passes for 266 yards after replacing starter Zach Sutton in the first quarter.
