PREP NOTES : La Quinta’s Demarest Interested in Trabuco Hills Baseball Job

Share

Dave Demarest, one of the county’s most successful baseball coaches in his 18 years at La Quinta, said he has applied for the vacant position at Trabuco Hills.

La Quinta has won seven Garden Grove League titles and qualified for the Southern Section playoffs 16 times under Demarest. In 1979, La Quinta lost to Lompoc in the Division 3-A championship game.

“They’ve got my resume,” Demarest said of Trabuco Hills. “I’ve never applied for another job since I’ve been at La Quinta, but the potential of the area down there would be appealing to any baseball coach.”

Demarest has been recommended to Bill Brand, Trabuco Hills principal, by Century Coach Rick Hayes, who was Brand’s roommate at Cal State Long Beach. Hayes was Demarest’s freshman baseball coach at Long Beach in 1969.

“Bill and I are longtime friends,” Hayes said. “I called him to check out the job, but I’m not going to apply. I’m lending my support to Dave.”

Brand said applications would remain open until Friday. Interviews for the job, which will include a position in either the English or mathematics departments, will begin Monday.
