San Fernando 14, Jefferson 13--San Fernando, ranked No. 4 in the Times’ City poll, escaped with a victory when Jefferson failed to score on a two-point conversion with no time remaining.
At Jefferson, the Tigers led, 14-7, late in the game. But Jefferson took advantage of a punt-formation error and scored a touchdown with as time expired.
Tony Brown lined up to punt on a fourth and seven from the San Fernando 14-yard line but couldn’t handle the center snap and Jefferson’s Marcus Johnson recovered on the three-yard line with 1:14 left.
Jefferson, which had used all its timeouts, failed to move the ball in three rushing attempts. On fourth down, running back Tony Thomas pulled up and passed to a wide open Nelson Hernandez in the end zone to trim the lead to 14-13.
Jefferson Coach Hank Johnson never hesitated to go for the two-point conversion. But Marcus Johnson’s pass fell incomplete.
San Fernando (2-0) scored on its first possession on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Leon Blunt. Brian Brison scored midway through the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Jefferson slipped to 0-2.
San Fernando’s La Karlos Townsend, who rushed for 154 yards against Fremont last week, was kept out of the game because of an unexcused absence from practice during the week.
