TOP PERFORMERS

Newport Harbor tailback Brandon Finney had his second-consecutive 100-yard rushing game Friday night in the Sailors’ 34-0 victory over Ocean View. He had 128 yards in 20 carries to follow a 107-yard performance last week against Orange.

Jose Prado completed 15 of 19 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown in El Modena’s 24-0 victory over Sunny Hills.

Mater Dei quarterback Billy Blanton completed passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns in Mater Dei’s 47-9 victory over St. Paul. Blanton, who is Orange County’s top-rated quarterback, has thrown for 894 yards and 12 touchdowns in three Monarch victories. Running back Chris Ruperto caught three of Blanton’s passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a touchdown.

Trabuco Hills’ Pat Burns passed for 237 yards, completing 18 of 34 passes, in a 10-10 tie with Dana Hills.

LATE HEROICS

Estancia’s Mike Smith’s interception at the three-yard line with 2:36 to play clinched the Eagles’ 3-0 victory over La Quinta. Smith had kicked a 34-yard field goal with 7:10 remaining.

ON DEFENSE

Newport Harbor linebacker Darin Mangnall handled the football almost as much as the Ocean View offense, intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble in the Sailors’ 34-0 victory.

Rafer Kingston recorded three of Laguna Hills seven sacks as the Hawks defeated San Clemente, 27-7.

NOTEWORTHY

I.D., please: Santa Ana football coach Dick Hill had been coaching for 10 years when Hawthorne’s Dan Robbins was born. Youth won out, however, as Robbins, 29, guided Hawthorne to a 21-14 victory over Santa Ana, spoiling Hill’s quest to become Orange County’s winningest coach.

What do opposing coaches say to each other prior to a game? Well, in the case of Sunny Hills’ Tim Devaney and El Modena’s Bill Backstrom it was:

Backstrom: “So do you always play sophomores on your freshman team? Those guys were huge today.”

Devaney: “Yeah, but they’re slow.”

Backstrom: “Some of those kids are as big as me.”

Devaney: “Yeah, but they’re slow.”
