SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The leading rushers in the game each scored a touchdown Friday as Fullerton and Whittier played to a 7-7 tie at California High School.

Fullerton had a chance to win late in the game but failed. The Indians got the ball on their own eight-yard line after a punt and started what they hoped would be the winning drive with 8:40 left. The Indians went 78 yards to the Whittier 14, but the drive stalled.

With 1:16 left, Fullerton had a fourth and eight and David Chacon lined up for a 31-yard field goal attempt. The snap was low to holder Daniel Chacon, who picked it up and completed a seven-yard pass to brother David. But David Chacon was stopped at the seven, a yard short of the first down.

Whittier (0-1-1) took over on downs with 1:09 left and elected to run the clock out.

David Chacon scored the Indians’ only points, going over from the one-yard line with 31 seconds left in the first quarter. He then kicked the extra point and Fullerton led, 7-0.

Fullerton (1-0-1) held the lead at the half, but Whittier finally evened the score on a six-yard scoring run by Art Ceja with 6:39 left in the third quarter and Geoff Lason’s extra-point kick. Ceja finished with 93 yards in 20 carries.

David Chacon, the twin brother of Fullerton quarterback Daniel Chacon, finished with 118 yards in 23 carries. Daniel Chacon ran for 55 yards in nine tries.
