Cypress Needs Only One Score to Beat Western
ANAHEIM — Johnny Teutimez caught a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabe Garcia for the only score of the game to lead Cypress High School to a 7-0 victory over Western at Handel Stadium.
Teutimez capped an 11-play, 73-yard drive with his catch in the middle of the end zone with 9 minutes 20 seconds remaining in the first half. Garcia, sidelined with an elbow injury in the second half of last week’s 12-7 loss to Kennedy, was six of six for 59 yards on the scoring drive. Teutimez finished the game with eight catches for 87 yards.
Western (0-2) moved the ball consistently on the ground behind Alfredo Villegas (nine carries, 84 yards) and Jason Covarrubias (nine carries, 53 yards), but could get no closer than the Cypress 25-yard line. Late in the game, Pioneer quarterback Brandon Brennan led a drive to the Centurion 25-yard line, but his fourth-down pass with 1:05 to play was incomplete.
Cypress cornerback Paul Daerer stopped two Western drives in the first half with a pair of interceptions. The Centurions (1-1) shut down Western’s passing game, limiting Brennan, a sophomore, to just five completions in 23 attempts.
