ROUNDUP : Goalkeeper Aids Offense in Harvard Water Polo Win

Ten Harvard-Westlake High water polo players, including the goalkeeper, scored at least once as the Wolverines outlasted Villa Park, 17-13, Saturday in the championship match of the Millikan tournament at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

The win was Harvard-Westlake’s second of the day. Earlier, the Wolverines (6-0) edged Capistrano Valley, 10-9, in a semifinal match.

Lance Weidner scored four goals against Villa Park and Jim Toring scored four against Capistrano Valley. Both were named to the all-tournament team.

Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Keifer, who recorded nine saves in the championship match, scored with three seconds left in the third quarter on a pool-length shot.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY

Mt. Carmel Invitational--Fernando Mendoza of Channel Islands recorded the fastest time of the day in winning the boys’ Division I senior race in 15 minutes 30 seconds at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Hart, the nation’s top-ranked boys’ team, had individual winners in the Division I junior-, sophomore- and freshman-class levels for the second consecutive week.

Keith Grossman clocked 15:47 over the three-mile course to take the junior race. Gavin Klinger and Brett Strahan each timed 16:15 in winning the sophomore and freshmen titles, respectively.

Grossman, Klinger and Strahan also won their races in the Seaside invitational Sept. 14.

Javier Ramirez (17:02) of Nordhoff won the freshman-class race at the Division II level.

Canyon’s Robin Heidt ran 16:44 over the girls’ 2.7-mile course to take the senior race.

Channel Islands’ Veronica Barajas did not finish the senior race because of dehydration.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Rancho Santiago tournament--Ventura College swept through pool play undefeated and went on to defeat De Anza of Cupertino in the championship match, 15-8, at Rancho Santiago College.

The Pirates edged Hancock, 15-12, in a quarterfinal and held off Cerritos, 15-10, in the semifinals of the 25-team tournament.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 7, Redlands 0--Willie Ruiz scored a hat trick and four other Kingsmen each scored a goal in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran led, 1-0, at halftime, then scored three times in the first 14 minutes of the second half to secure the win.

Cal Lutheran (3-1-1, 2-0-0 in conference play) outshot the Bulldogs, 29-6. Redlands dropped to 3-2-0, 1-1-0.
