SPORTSCOPE : Redondo-Mira Costa Classic Has Top Teams

Twelve of the top girls’ prep volleyball teams in Southern California will compete in the Redondo-Mira Costa Power Classic today and Saturday at Redondo High.

Mira Costa, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 5-A Division, tops a field that includes No. 4-ranked St. Joseph of Lakewood, No. 6 Corona del Mar, No. 7 Long Beach Poly and No. 10 Newport Harbor.

Rounding out the entries are Redondo, Santa Monica, South Torrance, Bishop Montgomery, Peninsula, El Modena and Torrey Pines from the San Diego Section.

Pool play begins today at 3 p.m. and resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team travels to play Northern Colorado and Denver this weekend.

The Toros (4-1-1), ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, visit Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon in Greeley and Denver on Sunday afternoon. Neither opponent is listed in the Division II rankings, although Northern Colorado has been a traditional Division II power.

Dominguez Hills’ 11-game unbeaten streak ended in a 2-1 loss to UC Davis (0-4-1) on Wednesday.

It also was the first time in 22 games that Dominguez Hills lost to a non-Division I team.

The Toros also battled to a 1-1 tie with Division I opponent San Diego State last week. Freshman forward Staci Blough scored the Toros’ goal. Blough is second in scoring with four goals and eight points.

Junior forward Amy Rubin leads the Toros with four goals and two assists and her twin sister, Anna, has two goals and two assists.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will open West Coast Conference play against Santa Clara tonight and the University of San Diego on Saturday at Gersten Pavilion.

Both matches start at 7 p.m. The Lions (8-6) lost to Cal State Northridge in four games Tuesday in Westchester.

Santa Clara is 8-5 and San Diego is 8-6. Loyola was picked to finish second in the WCC, San Diego fourth and Santa Clara fifth in a preseason poll of conference coaches.

The Lions have been led by junior outside hitter Joli Eberhart, who was named conference player of the week for the second week in a row. Eberhart leads the team in kills with 200, including 13 in the loss to Northridge.

Sophomore outside hitter Deanna Doolittle is second in kills and digs and freshman setter Robin Ortgiesen leads in assists.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team will compete in the UC Riverside Classic today and Saturday.

The five-team, round-robin tournament includes three teams in the top seven of the NCAA Division II rankings. Portland State is No. 3, UC Riverside No. 6 and Central Missouri State No. 7.

Dominguez Hills (11-7) has won eight of 10 matches. It will meet Riverside and Portland today and Central Missouri and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

With its three-game victory over Cal Lutheran on Tuesday, Dominguez Hills has the most victories since it went 13-16 in 1986. The leader has been sophomore outside hitter Gale Derricott, who has 191 kills.

Most of the top-ranked men’s and women’s players in the world will compete in the 1991 World Wheelchair Tennis Invitational today through Sunday at the South End Racquet and Health Club in Torrance.

Preliminary rounds are from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. today, semifinals from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and the finals at 9 a.m. Sunday. Among top-seeded players in singles play are Randy Snow of Texas and Laurant Giammartini of France in the men’s division and Chantal Vandierendonck and Ellen De Lange, both from Holland, in the women’s division.

Admission is $50 including breakfast, lunch and an awards banquet or $25 for the banquet only. The club is at 2800 Skypark Drive.

Terry Schroeder, captain of the 1992 U.S. Olympic water polo team, will be guest speaker at the South Bay Service Clubs Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Torrance Marriott, 3635 Fashion Way.

The Rancho Palos Verdes Department of Recreation and Parks has started a cross-country program for boys and girls from age 8 to 15.

Practices are from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Palos Verdes Intermediate School. The coach is Barry Sacks of Peninsula High.

The cost is $110 including equipment and a T-shirt. There is an additional fee to enter meets.

The Harbor College Extension Program is conducting six-week certification lessons for basic keelboat sailing starting on Saturday in Wilmington. The class is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Gilbert Baptist will fight Ron Amundsen for the North American Boxing Federation welterweight title on Monday night at the Forum.

Baptist is 22-11 with seven knockouts and Amundsen is 20-6-1 with eight KOs. The card starts at 7 p.m.
