Chula Vista 31, Southwest 7--Southwest (1-3, 0-1) returned the opening kickoff to the Chula Vista 23-yard line and scored four plays later. But it was all Chula Vista after that. A second-quarter safety got the Spartans (2-2, 1-0) going. Andy Duran kicked a 43-yard punt that was downed at the one-yard line, and on the next play Duran tackled the quarterback for two points. Running back Lamar Bailey then took over, running for three touchdowns and 185 yards.

Montgomery 11, Sweetwater 0--Montgomery (1-2-1) shut out the Red Devils (2-2) at Montgomery. Hector Medina kicked a 27-yard field goal to give Montgomery a 3-0 halftime lead. Tom Connor then sacked Sweetwater’s Paul Wapnowski for a safety in the third quarter to go up, 5-0. Montgomery running back Chander Burgos ran two yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Avocado League

El Camino 21, Escondido 0--Elias Noah scored on runs of 80 and one yards to lead No. 4 El Camino (3-1, 1-0) at Escondido. Noel Prefontaine added field goals of 21 and 37 yards as El Camino won for the 13th time in 15 games dating back to last season when it won the section 2-A title. Lance Lawton carried 18 times for 54 yards for Escondido (1-3, 0-1).

San Marcos 35, Carlsbad 12--A strong running attack from visiting San Marcos (3-1, 1-0) propelled them to a 35-12 victory over Carlsbad (2-2, 0-1). San Marcos was led by running back Mark Frazier’s 125 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 19 carries. San Marcos broke the game open in the second quarter when it scored 21 points, 14 of them on Frazier touchdowns.

Palomar League

Torrey Pines 21, San Dieguito 0--Kevin Dalzell (10 carries, 85 yards) scored on rushes of 37 and two yards for Torrey Pines (3-1, 1-0). Teammate Josh Stern carried 20 times for 95 yards, including the Falcons’ opening touchdown. Jarom Pollack had three sacks against San Dieguito (1-3, 0-1).

Rancho Bernardo 17, Ramona 14--Ramona’s fourth-quarter comeback stalled short as Rancho Bernardo kicked a 11-yard field goal for the victory. Pete Keleher ran for touchdown’s of one and two yards for Rancho Bernardo (3-1). Ramona fell to 0-4.

Nonleague

Point Loma 10, Helix 7--In a terribly sloppy game at Helix, No. 5 Point Loma (3-1) got a 26-yard field goal from Kris Auer with 4:43 left to win by the same score as last year. Helix (2-1-1) had an opportunity to tie the game with 1:43 left, but Point Loma’s Leighton Balallo blocked Jeremy Gottlieb’s 42-yard field-goal attempt.

Helix, which fumbled five times, had only five first downs and could manage only a two-yard touchdown run by Andreal Climon in the third quarter after Ed Messina recovered a fumble at the Pointer 36, and Highlander quarterback Gregg Wilbur (six for 21, 87 yards) connected with Adam Bright (four catches, 66 yards) on a 27-yard pass down the right sideline.

Point Loma, which was penalized nearly 100 yards in the first half and fumbled four times, had taken a 7-0 lead on a seven-yard run by Alex Gresham.

El Capitan 31, Granite Hills 20--Eric Rockhold led El Capitan (1-2-1) at home. Rockhold rushed for 211 yards in 19 carries, including a 45-yard touchdown, and added 86 yards on three punt returns, giving him 297 all-purpose yards. Rockhold also kicked a 27-yard field goal and was four for four on extra-point kicks.

Grossmont 38, West Hills 14--At West Hills, running back Jason Eskridge ran for 189 yards and four touchdowns including a 70-yarder in the fourth quarter to lead the unbeaten Foothillers (4-0). Grossmont first got on the board when Jon Henrichs scored on a 33-yard pass from Tom Karlo, who hit nine of 12 passes. Henrichs later kicked a 37-yard field goal. The lone bright spot for West Hills (0-4) was the running of Mike Campbell, who rushed for 108 yards and scored both touchdowns, the second from 51 yards.

Monte Vista 9, Santana 7--At Santana, Monte Vista (3-1) capped a long third-quarter drive with a six-yard touchdown pass from John Acosta to Jose Viegas for a come-from-behind victory. Santana (2-2) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Brian Lauer’s seven-yard run. Acosta’s 35-yard field goal cut the lead to 7-3 before the half. Monte Vista (3-1) held Santana the rest of the way and Santana missed a field-goal attempt in the final two minutes.

Mira Mesa 24, University City 12--Chad Davis passed for 318 yards, completing 21 of 33 passes, including two for touchdowns, to lead Mira Mesa (3-1) over University City (2-1). Daryle Owen caught six of Davis’ passes for 76 yards and one touchdown and Mark San Augustin seven for 112 yards. David Lynch had 98 yards on 13 carries.

San Diego 21, Mission Bay 13--On its home field, the Cavers overcame numerous penalties and fumbles to beat Mission Bay (1-2). Alonso Borques led San Diego, which has now started 4-0 for the first time since 1964, with two rushing touchdowns. Sunny Wilson returned that punt 83 yards for Mission Bay’s first touchdown.

San Diego’s top-ranked defense held Mission Bay’s Andy Guyader to one passing touchdown.

La Jolla 43, Hoover 6--Senior running back E.J. Watson (13 carries, 146 yards) scored on runs of 3, 14 and 43 yards as the eighth-ranked Vikings (4-0) rolled over Hoover (1-3). La Jolla scored 21 points in the second period, including a 41-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery by linebacker Kerry Pawl. La Jolla’s Andy Anello completed touchdown passes of 35 and 33 yards.

USDHS 29, St. Augustine 0--USDHS continued its dominance over St. Augustine winning its ninth consecutive game in the series before 5,000 at Mesa College. Craig Lewis rushed for 139 yards on 19 carries. Lewis scored all three of the Dons’ touchdowns, the first on a 59-yard and the last on a 55-yard reception from Mike Sexton.

Kearny 24, Serra 6--Serra (3-1) had pulled to 14-6 when James Curtis rushed 82 yards for the third-quarter touchdown that put Kearny out of reach. Curtis (13 carries, 154 yards) rushed for the Komets (4-0) first two touchdowns. Junior defensive end Rashad Wright had five quarterback sacks.

Coronado 12, Crawford 0--Quarterback Chris Bright provided all Coronado’s offense, rushing 17 times for 56 yards, including touchdowns of five and two yards. Sean Sadler gained 71 yards on 17 carries for Coronado (3-1). Crawford fell to 0-3-1.

CETYS 37, Clairemont 14--Tijuana-based CETYS was particularly effective on short yardage en route to its second victory in six days. CETYS (2-2) scored three times on one-yard runs and once on a two-yard scamper. Clairemont (1-3) gained all its yardage in the air, where John Price was 13 of 21 for 194 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Chelius.

Eight-man

La Jolla Country Day 60, Bishop’s 14--With 2:05 left in the third quarter, the 45-point rule went into effect and the game was called, but LJCD had already amassed 399 yards on offense and scored nine touchdowns.

Leading the charge was Rashaan Salaam, who scored six TDs, giving him 12 on the year. Salaam (15 carries, 217 yards) scored on runs of 33, 21, 6, 7, 3, and 23 yards.
