School: Newport Harbor High

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Outside hitter

Class: Senior

With Tara Kroesch missing Newport Harbor’s first five matches of the season with a knee injury, the Sailors depended on McLaren to pick up the slack, and McLaren worked hard to eliminate hitting errors. Now that Kroesch has returned, Newport Harbor is rolling and McLaren may have reached her peak in hitting efficiency in a victory Thursday over then-No.1 Laguna Beach. McLaren had 25 kills in 26 attempts, and the Sailors won, 11-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-6. “It’s definitely a game of mistakes, and if you’re making that few you’re usually going to end up on top,” Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said. McLaren and Kroesch were named to the all-tournament team at the San Marcos Invitational in Santa Barbara Saturday after the Sailors, who are ranked No. 2 in the latest Orange County poll, lost to Lakewood St. Joseph, 15-9, in the title game.

Other top performers:

Marcie Asch, a Corona del Mar tennis player who won the singles title at the Orange County Invitational. Asch also won five of her six singles sets during two dual matches.

Grace Fu, who swept six singles sets for Pacifica, running her winning streak to 99 sets. Including 16 doubles sets she won as a sophomore, Fu, a senior, has won 115 in a row.
