Mt. SAC Title Next on Hart’s List : Cross-country: Sweepstakes win for Indians would solidify position as country’s No. 1 team.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The honor roll for the Hart High boys’ cross-country team is both impressive and lengthy:

* One state Division I championship (1990).

* Successive Southern Section titles (1989, ‘90).

* Eight consecutive Foothill League banners (1983-90).

* One Stanford invitational title (1991).

* Two Bell-Jeff invitational wins (1986, ‘88).

The only incomplete on the Indians’ major-competition transcript is a team sweepstakes championship in the prestigious Mt. San Antonio College invitational, a requirement Coach Gene Blankenship hopes to fulfill today en route to a higher goal.

“This is the first time we’ve been undefeated this far into a season,” Blankenship said. “Obviously, we’d like to win Mt. SAC . . . because if we lose we’d probably miss a chance at the mythical national championship.”

Although there is no national race, the team ranked No. 1 at season’s end by The Harrier magazine is considered the national champion. Hart has been the nation’s top-ranked team since the start of the season and solidified the standing by thumping No. 3 Madera in the Stanford invitational Oct. 5.

The Indians will again face Madera, a Central Section school, in the team sweepstakes race at 9:43 a.m. Hart’s last loss was to Madera, 96-161, in last year’s Mt. SAC meet. Also slated to compete are Southern Section powers Peninsula, Camarillo, Channel Islands and Hoover. San Diego Mira Mesa and North Coast Section power De La Salle of Concord also will compete.

The Agoura girls’ team will make its first invitational appearance this season after jumping to the No. 1 ranking on The Harrier list.

The Chargers will attempt to win their third team sweepstakes title in a row but must face three teams ranked among the top 11 nationally. Agoura, San Diego Mt. Carmel (No. 7), Huntington Beach Edison (No. 8) and Arroyo Grande (No. 11) will all meet for the first time this season.

Top contenders in the individual sweepstakes races include defending state Division III champion Jeff Wilson of Newbury Park and Agoura’s Ryan Wilson in the boys’ race.

Thousand Oaks’ Stacey Auer and Canyon’s Robin Heidt will meet in the girls’ competition.
