Cerritos 32, El Camino 24--There were less than idyllic conditions for El Camino College and Cerritos’ Mission Conference Northern Division opener last night.

El Camino’s Murdock Stadium was wet, windy and slippery thanks to a drizzle in the first half.

Cerritos (4-2) took advantage of five El Camino miscues in the first 16 minutes to build a 17-0 lead en route to a 32-24 victory, ending El Camino’s 12-game unbeaten streak in division play.

The victory was Cerritos first against El Camino (3-4) since a 46-20 win in 1984.

Cerritos’ first touchdown came after El Camino’s Eric Gamble fumbled on his own 35-yard-line. Falcon Rob Hays scooped up the ball and ran for the score.

After fumbling again on its next possession, El Camino finally appeared to be on a drive when Al Savea fumbled on the Cerritos’ 45-yard-line.

Seven plays later the Falcon’s scored their second touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Dean Grosfeld to Cliff Parks with 14:54 left in the second quarter.

Once again the Warriors fumbled on their next possession. Rodney Anderson never got his hands on the center snap and Falcon Tim Norton recovered on the Warrior 47.

Four plays later Jorge Madrigal kicked a 43-yard field goal to make it 17-0.

When the Warriors were able to maintain control of the ball they moved well, scoring two second-quarter touchdowns to cut the lead to 17-14.

Cerritos responded by moving 83 yards in six plays to take a 23-14 lead at the half.

The key play was a 49-yard run by Darrell Thompson, who gained 130 yards in the first half in 14 carries.

After both teams kicked early second-half field goals, El Camino moved to within 26-24 after a six-yard run by Savea ended an eight-play 49-yard drive with 13:21 left in the game.

Cerritos responded with a six-play 80-yard drive of its own. It ended with a one-yard run by Kendall Alexander with 10:11 left. Madrigal missed the extra point making the score 32-24.

After a muffed punt that was recovered by El Camino at the Falcons’ 13-yard line, Cerritos’ Russell Clark intercepted an Anderson pass at the one with 6:22 left to stop the Warriors’ final threat.

The Warriors travel to Pasadena City next week.
