Parmenter, who as the softball coach at Huntington Beach High has built a solid program, is having a tougher time with basketball at Saddleback. “Our school is big in size; unfortunately our kids aren’t all that big,” Parmenter said. Furthermore, the Roadrunners have the misfortune to play in one of the toughest leagues in the county. But things seem to be improving. Parmenter has started a summer league team, and for the first time since she has been coach, there might be enough players for a freshman-sophomore team. But Parmenter has no illusions that Saddleback will challenge the league leaders this season. “If we’re a better team at the end of the year then we were at the beginning, I’ll be happy,” Parmenter said. The learning process will be especially crucial for Chavarria, a freshman who will start at point guard. “She’s got the talent; now she’s got to get the confidence,” Parmenter said. “It’s hard to be a leader at that position when you are a freshman telling seniors what to do.” Martinez, who is in her third season on the varsity, is the teams’ best athlete and top defender.
