COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC, Irvine Valley Win in Men’s Soccer to Reach State Final

Orange Coast and Irvine Valley advanced to the State men’s soccer final today with victories in matches decided by penalty kicks Friday at El Camino College.

Orange Coast defeated Santa Rosa, 3-2, outscoring the Bear Cubs, 4-3, in the penalty kicks and Irvine Valley topped DeAnza, 4-3, winning 5-3 in penalty kicks.

Scott Goldman, Lance Barker, Brian Slayback and Jason Hooper scored for Orange Coast after Ali Mossadeghi missed the first kick. Orange Coast goalie Ken Langworthy blocked Tim O’Donnell’s final shot to assure the victory.

Orange Coast took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the match on Slayback’s goal. O’Donnell tied the score nine minutes into the second half.

Tim Johnsen gave Santa Rosa a 2-1 lead seven minutes into overtime, before Barker tied the score again seven minutes later.

Irvine Valley took a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Keith Rosenberg and Shawn Houshmand. DeAnza tied the score with two goals in the first two minutes of the second half.

Jeff Soares gave DeAnza a 3-2 lead 14 minutes into overtime, but Peiro Mendiola put the game into penalty kicks, scoring on a penalty kick with four minutes left.

In the Golden West men’s basketball tournament:

Southwestern 81, Cypress 79--Robbie Shelton scored 25 points and Flip Banks had 15 but Cypress (6-2) lost in one championship semifinal. Southwestern plays Cerritos at 8 tonight for the tournament title.
