HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : San Dieguito Gets Past Torrance in Overtime

David Demian was San Dieguito’s ace in the hole as the Mustangs defeated Torrance, 67-65, in overtime in the seventh-place basketball game of the Newport Beach Tournament Saturday night.

Torrance hit two free throws to force overtime. San Dieguito’s Sterling Wyman and Jeremy Meeks each hit a free throw, which Torrance matched to tie the game at 65-65, before Demian stole the ball and hit the game-winning basket.

Demian’s 19 points and seven rebounds led the Mustangs (2-2). Teammates Craig Bilhauer (14 points) and Ryan Mancuso (13) helped lift San Dieguito.

UC/SD Tournament

San Diego 69, Castle Park 61--Sophomore Tavie Mason’s 23 points led San Diego in the final game of round-robin play. Roman Diaz scored 12 points and had eight rebounds and Travis Nichols added 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Cavers (2-1). Bob Stanton led Castle Park (1-2) with 13 points.

Trabuco Hills Tournament

Riverside North 86, Carlsbad 80 (3OT)--Carlsbad let an eight-point lead slip away with a minute and a half left in regulation in the fifth-place game. Kewan Shariff had a game-high 19 points and teammate Chad Nelson contributed 14 points for Carlsbad (2-2).

“We’re real small,” Carlsbad Coach John Nelson said. “They were definitely dominant, but we played great.”

Shootout at the Hill Tournament

Rancho Buena Vista 58, La Jolla 42--The Longhorns (2-0) slowly pulled away in second half. RBV’s Evan Osmundson scored 17 points and teammate Abe Ajlouny scored 16.

Norsemen/Warhawk Tournament

Poway 61, Mt. Miguel 54--Kyle Milling and Justin Kruse led Poway with 14 and 12 points respectively. But the story was Mt. Miguel’s Mike Clymer, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, who scored 15 points and had 16 rebounds. His teammate Marco Gallardo chipped in 11 points and added five steals, five assists and five rebounds.

Nonleague

Granite Hills 89, Crawford 32--Granite Hills’ Billy Wade led all scorers with 17 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Teammate Bob Allums pumped in 16 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds as Granite Hills improved to 2-1. Crawford fell to 0-3.

GIRLS

Santana Tournament

Santana 46, Castle Park 33--Santana finished round-robin play undefeated (4-0). Erin Pope’s 12 points and 15 rebounds contributed to her being named tournament Most Valuable Player. Dolores Odom scored 11 points for Castle Park (2-2).
