OUTLOOK

Costa Mesa has been the doormat in the league the past two seasons, failing to win a league game. But Brewer returns an experienced team this season, and promises the Mustangs will “be much more competitive.” “We’re a lot more patient this year, and that comes with experience,” Brewer said. “We don’t have the greatest athletes, but they work hard and it’s going to pay off for them.” Brewer thinks the Mustangs can compete with teams such as Century, Laguna Beach and Laguna Hills. “It will be tough with Estancia and Trabuco Hills because of their size,” he said. Pickens is the Mustangs’ top returner, averaging 17 points and earning all-league honors last season. The only starter missing from last season’s team is Mike Degrazio (15 points per game), who Brewer said has dropped out of school. Brewer has been pleased with the play of his guards in early season victories over St. Margaret’s and Southern California Christian. “We’re a little thin up front,” Brewer said, “but we’re hoping we can run on some teams with our guards.” Harris, promoted from the junior varsity, has played particularly well, as has freshman Smith, who’s averaging eight points and six assists off the bench.
