OUTLOOK

The defending State Division II champion Tillers might have the talent to repeat, but you wouldn’t know it by watching them early this season. Not only have three starters, including league MVP David Beilstein and Thomas Clayton, now at San Jose State, graduated, but Tustin is missing three players who will start this season. For the first time in McCluskey’s five seasons at the school, two starters are coming off the football team, which played for the Division VI title Friday night. But the biggest loss is Moore, who seriously sprained his ankle in the first practice. He practiced again for the first time this week but won’t play until Tuesday. Because of their missing starters, the Tillers have struggled against the strong teams they have played in tournaments, and Roche has had to carry most of the scoring load. He averaged 31 points in four Trabuco Hills tournament games, which should help him when the rest of the team joins him. “We’re a long way away from being pretty good because of the situation we’ve been put in,” McCluskey said. “We’re just far behind everybody else.” But when the team comes together it might be one of the strongest in the county. The Tillers went 33-2 during the summer, including a victory at Mater Dei.
