The Brea-Olinda girls’ basketball team’s long-running domination of California opponents ended Friday night with a 47-34 loss to Thousand Oaks in the second round of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High School.

The Ladycats, who had not lost to a state team since they were beaten by Auburn Placer in the State Division III final in the spring of 1990, were 41-1 since then before Friday, losing only to Christ the King of New York in 34 games last season.

But Michelle Palmisano scored 21 points from the outside, and Marion Jones, the Olympic sprint hopeful who transferred from Oxnard Rio Mesa this year, added 19 for Thousand Oaks (5-0), which pulled away with a 14-3 run in the third quarter.

The long-range shooting of Jody Anton and Nicole Erickson got the Ladycats off to a quick start. Brea-Olinda was in front, 17-12, with 3:20 to play in the half before Thousand Oaks charged back to take a 19-17 halftime lead as Nicole Orr scored on a backdoor play, and Palmisano added five points on a 22-foot shot and a drive.

Jones took over in the second half, scoring 14 points as the Lancers pulled away.

Anton led Brea-Olinda (8-1) with 15 points, and Erickson added 13.

The Ladycats face Cerritos in a consolation bracket game today at 4 p.m. at Santa Barbara High.
