MARINA GIRLS : Marina Outlasts Ocean View, 64-49

After a close first half, Marina turned up the heat in the second half to defeat Ocean View, 64-49, Saturday night in a championship semifinal of the Marina girls’ basketball tournament.

The Vikings (11-1) outscored Ocean View, 17-8, in the third quarter behind the shooting of Aimee Periolat and Julie Luft. The two combined for 11 of Marina’s points in the period.

Periolat, who tied center Jessica Trippet with a team-high 14 points, gave Marina a 41-31 lead with 1 minute, 47 seconds to play in the third quarter. Luft, who finished with seven points, scored on a three-point shot with one second remaining in the quarter to increase the Viking lead to 46-33 after three quarters.

Ocean View (8-3) rallied in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get closer than 58-47, when guard Kenna Masuda converted a free throw with 3:14 left to play. Masuda scored eight points and led the Seahawks with 11 rebounds.

The Seahawks stayed with Marina, the county’s third-ranked team and Sunset League rival, in the early going.

A pair of free throws by Masuda with no time left in the opening quarter cut the Marina lead to 14-12. A jumper by forward Kristy Bell with 42 seconds before the half pulled Ocean View within four, 29-25. Bell led all scorers with 15 points.

Trippet, who Friday had 13 rebounds in a quarterfinal victory over Huntington Beach, had a game-high 18 rebounds against Ocean View.

Marina meets Bishop Montgomery in the championship game at 7 p.m. Monday.

Bishop Montgomery 65, Mission Viejo 35--The Knights held a 17-8 first-quarter lead and a 34-13 halftime advantage, and cruised the rest of the way in a championship semifinal game. Bishop Montgomery (8-1) benefited from 40 turnovers by the Diablos (7-3).

Estancia 55, Fountain Valley 54 (OT)--Forward Becky Meabon made a 15-foot jumper with five seconds left in overtime to give the Eagles (7-5) the victory in a fifth-place semifinal game. The teams tied, 50-50, in regulation and Fountain Valley (5-7) took a 54-53 lead with 16 seconds to play on two free throws by Julie Murdent.

Kent Meridian (Washington) 51, Huntington Beach 43--The Royals advanced to the fifth-place game Monday against Estancia.
