During the Southern Section girls’ basketball playoffs last season, Newport Harbor Coach Shannon Jakosky enlisted her father, retired Oregon State Coach Ralph Miller, to help her coach the Sailors because she was pregnant and near delivery.

Jakosky gave birth to a girl the day before Newport Harbor lost to Lompoc, 68-48, in the Division III-AA quarterfinals, a game Miller helped coach.

So did San Clemente Coach Mary Mulligan consider having father-in-law Bill Mulligan, the former UC Irvine coach, lend a hand with the team when she delivered her first child Friday?

“It crossed my mind when I read about (Jakosky) last year,” said Mulligan from her home, where she’s recuperating after delivering 7-pound 15-ounce Tori Michelle. “But I already had prepared for my assistants to take over. I knew this was going to interfere with some things.”

Mulligan was at the hospital Friday while the Tritons were on their way to a 59-42 upset over Tustin in the semifinals of the Costa Mesa tournament. On Monday, she was at courtside when San Clemente lost, 65-46, to Capistrano Valley in the championship game. But Mulligan said she still let her assistant coaches, Brian Scherbart and Karen Gerhard, run the show.

“I really wanted to see them play against Capistrano Valley,” Mulligan said. “I didn’t get really involved, but I put my two cents in.”

Mulligan said some parents were teasing her about returning to work so soon after giving birth.

“All the moms came down and said, ‘You’re ruining it for us. Our husbands expect us to be back in the kitchen,’ ” she said. “And the dads said, ‘Wait a minute. My wife had me running around and doing stuff for her.’ ”

But Mulligan said she got more rest than she probably would have at home.

“I probably sat more at the game,” she said.
