BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Jackson Heats Up in Antelope Valley Win, 64-62

Paced by the torrid shooting of D. J. Jackson, the Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team overcame a 17-point deficit Saturday night to steal a Foothill Conference game against host Rio Hondo, 64-62.

After scoring only two points in the first half, Jackson was a one-man show, scoring 26 of the Marauders’ 42 second-half points to help pull Antelope Valley (8-9, 2-0) into a 62-62 tie.

Chris Walters then converted a pair of free throws with three seconds to play to chill Rio Hondo (11-6, 1-1), which led, 29-22, at intermission. Walters finished with 12 points.

Jackson, who made nine of 26 shots from the field and 10 of 12 free throws to finish with 28 points, also gathered in 14 rebounds and blocked two shots.

Aaron Cornell led Rio Hondo with 20 points, connecting on six of eight three-point attempts.

In another men’s game:

The Master’s 77, Western Washington 71--Jason Webster scored a game-high 20 points to lead Master’s (8-7) in a nonleague game. David Humphreys scored 15 points and Joe Jon Bryant added 13 for Master’s, which led, 46-36, at halftime.

Stu Epperson contributed 11 points for Master’s.

WOMEN

Nebraska 85, Cal State Northridge 53--Center Karen Jennings had 28 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Cornhuskers in a nonconference game at CSUN.

Northridge (0-16) trailed, 41-19, at halftime. Janel Vega came off the bench to lead the Matadors with 16 points and teammate Jodi Bittner added 11.

Canyons 76, Oxnard 29--Kelli McCaskill had 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead Canyons (8-10, 2-0) in a Western State Conference game at Oxnard.

Kim Fischer scored 17 points and Shannon Solway added 16 for Canyons, which outscored Oxnard, 48-12, in the second half.

Ventura 66, Santa Monica 46--Venessa Hackett scored a team-high 17 points and took 10 rebounds and teammates Cori Herman and Ytteb Bowls added 14 and 12 points as the Pirates (14-5, 2-0) cruised in a Western State Conference game at home.

BOYS

Redwood Christian 67, Holy Martyrs 58--Soko Balian scored a team-high 25 points and gathered in 13 rebounds and teammate Michael Balian, no relation, scored 18, but the Armens (6-4) fell in the championship game of the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.

Palmdale 62, St. Genevieve 58--Miguel Buelna scored 16 points and Eric Stone added 15 for host Palmdale (7-8) in a nonleague contest that was decided in the final minute.

Joe Foreman had 11 points for Palmdale.

Jeremy Iaccino led St. Genevieve (3-7) with 22 points and seven assists.

GIRLS

Bishop Montgomery 72, Bell-Jeff 56--Mirlen Martinez had 20 points for Bishop Montgomery (12-1) in the championship game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Lori Leon had 19 and 13 rebounds for Bell-Jeff (11-3).

North Hollywood 43, Narbonne 41--Karma Goodman, a 5-11 senior center, scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and had 18 rebounds to lead North Hollywood (9-3) in a consolation game of the L.A. Invitational at L.A. City College.

Rachel Fogelhut’s two free throws with 10 seconds left gave North Hollywood a 43-39 lead.

Oxnard 54, Dos Pueblos 33--Lupe Aguilar scored a game-high 16 points and Alicia Sims added 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead host Oxnard (5-3, 1-0) in a Channel League contest.

Tiffany Bumpus had 10 points for Oxnard.

Holy Martyrs 67, Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 51--The Armens built a 26-point lead after three quarters and coasted to the championship of the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.

Linda Dukmajian and Karineh Abramians each scored 16 points for Holy Martyrs (9-2).

Village Christian 49, Holy Family 30--Christy Ludwig, a 5-foot-11 sophomore center, scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Village Christian (6-2) at home.
