GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : McOwen’s Late Score Gives San Clemente the Victory

San Clemente, ranked third in Orange County, held on to defeat Mission Viejo, 42-40, Thursday in a South Coast League girls’ basketball game, winning at Mission Viejo for the first time in 11 years.

Kristin McOwen completed a three-point play to give the Tritons a 41-40 lead with a minute remaining in the game. Michelle MacIntyre made one of two free throws down the stretch to extend the Tritons’ lead to two and Magdalena Gorska missed a shot at the buzzer for the Diablos.

McOwen had 23 points and eight rebounds, Chastity Washington had 15 rebounds and Maili Rohner had eight assists for San Clemente (11-5, 2-1).

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 51, El Toro 19--Alisa Farr had 12 points and seven assists and Susan Scott had 11 points for Capistrano Valley (17-1, 3-0), which led, 18-2, after one quarter and, 37-5, at the half.

Dana Hills 68, Irvine 23--Adara Newidouski had 19 points and Karun Grossman 12 for the Dolphins (12-5, 2-1), who led, 33-9, at the half.

In the Angelus League:

Santa Margarita 51, Bishop Amat 43--Lesley Nolan had 25 points and 15 rebounds for the host Eagles (11-7, 2-0).

In the Century League:

El Modena 60, Villa Park 34--Kathy Farina scored 12 of her 20 points in the first quarter for El Modena (7-5, 3-0) at Villa Park. Tara Earl paced Villa Park (4-8, 1-2) with 14 points.

Santa Ana Valley 37, Foothill 28--Marie Pulu had 17 points for the Falcons (8-7, 2-1) at home.

Canyon 56, Orange 28--Erin Waggoner, who had eight assists and five steals, scored 17 points for Canyon (8-6, 3-0).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 39, Esperanza 33--Jody Caruso had 11 points and 12 rebounds to help the Hawks to their first victory over the Aztecs in 15 years. Erin Vessey had 19 rebounds for El Dorado (13-3, 3-0).

Cypress 50, Los Alamitos 33--Lupe Nava had 11 points, 10 rebounds, eight blocked shots and eight steals for host Cypress (11-4, 3-0). Jessica Eggleston added nine points and 17 rebounds for the Centurions.

In the Sea View League:

University 48, Newport Harbor 35--Jennifer Stanley scored a game-high 15 points for University (11-6, 2-1). Teammate Tara Wolff added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Woodbridge 84, Corona del Mar 28--Senior Belinda Taub had 23 points and 16 rebounds for Woodbridge (12-5, 1-2). Center Priya Vesudez had 10 rebounds and 10 points.

Tustin 79, Saddleback 25--Shari Needham scored 19 points of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter and had 12 rebounds for Tustin (13-5, 3-0). Christine Garner added 19 points for the Tillers.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 70, Century 23--Costa Mesa (12-6, 3-0) led, 23-5, at the end of the first quarter and cruised to the victory at home. Olivia DiCamilli scored 17 points to lead the Mustangs, and Janet Ospina added 13.

Laguna Hills 41, Estancia 38--Sarah Brewer hit a layup and free throw in the final 90 seconds for her only points of the game to keep the host Hawks ahead.

Andrea Nelson had 13 for Laguna Hills (9-4, 3-0). Monique Sweet had a game-high 14 for Estancia (10-7, 2-1) and Leah Braatz added 10.

Trabuco Hills 40, Laguna Beach 31--April Kargel scored 14 points to lead visiting Trabuco Hills (2-10, 1-2). Cole Stephens scored 15 points and had 14 rebounds for Laguna Beach (2-11, 0-3).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 103, Anaheim 19--Jody Anton scored 32 points as the visiting Ladycats overwhelmed Anaheim. Jennifer Crawford added 24 points and Katie Bauer 15 for top-ranked Brea-Olinda (14-2, 2-0).

Savanna 50, Western 34--Stacey Aliff had 16 points and Sara Works 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Rebels (12-3, 2-0).

Valencia 65, Magnolia 44--Nicole Kubata had 20 points and Allison Granger had 18 points and 12 rebounds for host Valencia (8-7, 1-1).

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 47, Brethren Christian 24--Michelle Smelcer had 14 points, five assists and five steals and Heidi Elliott had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (6-8, 3-1).

Orange Lutheran 49, Whittier Christian 38--Tara Stephens had 17 points and Becky Cole had 18 rebounds for Orange Lutheran (9-5, 4-0).

In nonleague play:

Calvary Chapel 68, Liberty Christian 49--Blythe Linsey had 27 points and Sunshine McFarland 18 for host Calvary Chapel.
