Louisiana Player Commits to Aztec Football Team

The San Diego State football team received an oral commitment from another Louisiana high school player Monday.

Leonard Jones, a 6-feet-2, 175-pound defensive back, said he will attend SDSU next fall. Jones attended Carver High School in New Orleans, where Aztec running back Marshall Faulk went, and is close friends with Faulk. The two attended middle school and high school together.

“(Jones) is not a flashy kid,” Carver Coach Wayne Reese said. “He’s a real hard worker. He’s a devastating tackler in the open field. After they get a good look at him, they’re going to be amazed at the things he can do.”

Jones led Carver in interceptions (seven) and tackles (147) last fall while playing mostly free safety. Reese said Jones has been timed at 4.2 in the 40-yard dash.

“He runs neck and neck with Marshall,” Reese said.

Although SDSU was the only school Jones visited, Reese said Grambling, Southern and Louisiana State were recruiting him. Jones has already qualified for eligibility on his standardized test scores.
