BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hall’s Heroics in Final Minute Lift Canyons in WSC Opener

Rasaan Hall made a three-point shot with 40 seconds to play to give College of the Canyons the boost it needed to defeat Bakersfield, 68-63, in a Western State Conference opener on Wednesday at Bakersfield.

The shot by Hall, a former Crespi High standout, gave Canyons a 64-63 lead. Hall, who finished with 13 points, added two free throws with 30 seconds to play. David Langley scored 20 points for Canyons (16-5).

In other men’s games:

Cal Lutheran 78, Whittier 54--Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 29 points to lead Cal Lutheran (7-8, 3-0) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at home.

Kelly Crosby and Simon O’Donnell each added 14 points for the Kingsmen.

Antelope Valley 86, Citrus 69--D.J. Jackson scored 33 points and had 22 rebounds for the visiting Marauders (12-10, 6-1) in a Foothill Conference game. Chris Walters added 17 points.

WOMEN

Valley 70, Santa Monica 61--Rosa Mendez, the City Section 3-A Division player of the year last season at Roosevelt High, scored 19 of her season-high 26 points in the second half to spark the visiting Monarchs (20-3, 6-0) in a Western State Conference South Division game.

Mendez made 12 of 18 shots from the field, including a three-point shot with 58 seconds to play, to close out the scoring. Valley’s Stacie Toon scored 16 points and had nine rebounds.

Antelope Valley 107, Citrus 26--The visiting Marauders (15-6, 4-0) set two team records and Paula Page became Antelope Valley’s career leader in points and rebounds in the Foothill Conference game.

It was Antelope Valley’s widest margin of victory, and no opponent has scored fewer points.

Page had 28 points and 14 rebounds. Her 861 career points surpasses Kim Fairchild, who scored 849 from 1986-88. Page’s 524 rebounds tops Ramona Mitchell, who had 516 in the 1983 and 1984 seasons.

Canyons 88, Bakersfield 73 (OT)--Kim Fischer scored 26 points and Shannon Solway had 25 points and 12 rebounds for visiting Canyons (10-12, 4-2) in a WSC South Division game.

Moorpark 82, Oxnard 49--Diem Nguyen scored a season-high 26 points and Tamara Pacheco added 21 for the host Raiders (9-12, 3-4) in a WSC North Division game.

Lisa Huffaker scored 17 points and Stephanie Ungersma added nine rebounds for Moorpark. Karen Revelez led Oxnard (2-19, 1-6) with 25 points.

BOYS

Buena 85, Rio Mesa 70--Lance Fay equaled a career high with 41 points, leading the visiting Bulldogs (12-2, 6-0) in a Channel League game.

Fay, a senior who made seven three-point baskets, left the game with three minutes to play. He scored 41 against Hueneme in a league opener Jan. 3.

Ventura 58, Dos Pueblos 49--Host Ventura rallied from a 23-14 deficit at the half in a Channel League game.

Curt Vaughan scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half and teammate Randy Martinez had 14 of his 18 after intermission to lead Ventura (12-5, 3-3).

Santa Barbara 81, Hueneme 57--Wendell Nunnery scored a game-high 21 points for Hueneme (9-8, 2-4) in the Channel League game.

Thousand Oaks 68, Channel Islands 66--Andrew Borg scored a game-high 26 points as visiting Thousand Oaks (11-5 overall) improved to 6-0 in Marmonte League play.

Noe Noyola scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds for Channel Islands (7-8, 1-5).

Westlake 57, Camarillo 55--Forward Joey Leavitt scored on a putback shot with nine seconds left to give host Westlake (7-8, 3-3) the Marmonte League win.

Leavitt scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and also had 14 rebounds. Jaime Jaquez had 17 points for Camarillo (3-10, 1-5).

Royal 70, Agoura 61--Brett Osterhoudt paced visiting Royal (5-11, 2-4) with a game-high 26 points in a Marmonte League game. Eddie Corridori led Agoura (10-5, 3-3) with 18 points.

St. Bonaventure 63, Fillmore 62--Chris Cattanach made a 15-foot baseline jump shot with 25 seconds to play lift host St. Bonaventure (8-7) in a nonleague game. Fillmore’s Rudy Alcantar scored 25 points.

Bishop Diego 65, Moorpark 60 (OT)--Robbie Salone scored 22 points and Ryan Huisenga added 15 for host Moorpark (5-12, 1-1) in a Tri-Valley League game.
